After Yakushima’s Forests, Discover a Different Island
Yakushima is a dream destination for hikers. Ancient cedar trees, moss-covered trails, and dramatic mountains make the island one of Japan’s most memorable places to explore on foot. Many visitors come specifically to hike to Jomon Sugi, wander through Shiratani Unsuikyo, or climb Mount Miyanoura.
But your journey does not have to end when the hike is over. Nearby Tanegashima offers a striking contrast: wide ocean horizons, coastal scenery, fascinating history, and a close connection to Japan’s space program. Combining the two islands lets you experience two very different sides of southern Japan.
Why Combine Yakushima and Tanegashima?
On Yakushima, the focus is often on the forest: walking beneath towering trees, crossing streams, and climbing mountain paths. These hikes can be long and physically demanding, so adequate preparation and recovery time are important.
Tanegashima invites a different pace. Take a coastal walk, enjoy the sea views, discover local history, or plan a visit around the space center area. You do not need to schedule another strenuous activity immediately after your hike. Sometimes a slower day beside the ocean is the perfect continuation of an outdoor adventure.
Travel Between Yakushima and Tanegashima
High-speed ferry services connect Yakushima and Tanegashima on selected routes. Depending on the service, ferries may use Miyanoura Port or Anbo Port on Yakushima and Nishinoomote Port on Tanegashima. Sailing times and routes vary, so do not assume that every ferry stops at both islands.
Weather and sea conditions can cause cancellations or timetable changes. After a full-day hike, consider staying overnight on Yakushima rather than planning a tight connection. Check the latest routes, schedules, and service alerts on the official Toppy & Rocket ferry website.
Three Experiences to Enjoy on Tanegashima
Ocean scenery: After the enclosed beauty of Yakushima’s forests, Tanegashima’s beaches and expansive coastline offer a refreshing change. A gentle seaside walk or scenic drive can be a rewarding way to unwind.
Space exploration: Tanegashima is home to the Tanegashima Space Center, operated by JAXA. Visitor access, exhibitions, and tours may change, so consult JAXA’s official website before traveling. Rocket launches are subject to schedule changes and should never be considered guaranteed.
Island history: Tanegashima is famous for the introduction of European firearms to Japan in 1543. Historical attractions around Nishinoomote provide another dimension to your island journey.
